As for the second half, the story turns into a Wallflowers soap opera featuring the usual suspects: Phoebe, Sebastian, Westcliff, Evie, and Lillian.īy the time we get to the final act, Keir and Merritt finally find their way to Scotland. Keir and Merritt had some cute scenes together as a couple, but the lack of build up, the lack of tension, the insta-love, and the useless amnesia trope ruined it for me. Merritt has a bit more personality, but she’s not memorable like her father. He literally only talks about Scotland and whiskey. Keir doesn’t really have a personality aside from being Scottish and making whiskey. The first half of this book is about Keir and Merritt. I really didn’t see the point of the amnesia trope aside from creating unnecessary drama.

It created a bit of drama with Merritt because she was devastated that he didn’t remember her, but amnesiac Keir was into her regardless. Despite losing his memory of Merritt, Keir still gravitated toward her. The amnesia trope can be well executed depending on the context, but it was practically useless in this story. I was actually shocked by how quickly things were moving along.Īround the 40% mark, Keir loses his memory of the time he spent with Merritt. There was zero tension and zero build up because the romance was fast tracked. The insta-love trope just didn’t work for me in this instance. And then BAM! Merritt and Keir were in love by their second meeting. So much happened within the first few hours after their meet cute. I actually really liked Merritt and Keir’s first meeting, but then their relationship was fast tracked in the space of a few hours. As you might have guessed based on the title and the synopsis, Keir is in fact the illegitimate son of Sebastian, born out of an affair before Sebastian married Evie. Ethan and Garrett do appear a few times, but neither Merritt nor Keir is a Ravenel. Devil in Disguise has zero connection to the Ravenels. Kleypas should have renamed this series to Sebastian And His Brood. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: the Ravenels series has been hijacked by Sebastian. You should ask Lisa Kleypas and the publisher.
